Any Body Can Dance

Beyond Bollywood, co-presented by JRDreamland and FunForest, organized the project "Any Body Can Dance," funded by the Equal Opportunities Commission and supported by VESSEL. This event took place on October 13 and 14, 2018 (Saturday and Sunday).
The project aimed to raise public awareness about valuing people, empowering underserved groups, and enhancing social integration through the power of Bollywood dance. It conveyed the message that dance is accessible to all and that everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy it.
Bollywood dance, being a non-mainstream dance form in Hong Kong, shares similarities with underserved groups who are often overlooked by the general public. By using Bollywood dance, the project sought to help these groups reintegrate into the community through collective effort and shared experiences.
The event featured dance performances, workshops in hip hop and Bollywood styles, a booth showcasing Indian culture prepared by the Indian community, and a booth for learning sign language.

The Indian Film Festival 2018 - Women in Bollywood

The Indian Film Festival 2018, themed "Women in Bollywood," was organized by BEYOND Bollywood in collaboration with the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong from March 24 to 25, 2018. This two-day event featured four movie screenings, post-screening discussions, Indian dance performances, henna art, and Indian artwork.
Indian films had gained significant attention from Hong Kong audiences in recent years, yet stereotypical images of Indian cinema remained strong. The festival aimed to showcase a different perspective by presenting four women-centric films that highlighted the diverse roles of women in Indian cinema. Through engaging discussions, the event sought to deepen the audience's understanding of Indian films and the representation of women within them.
The festival welcomed Swara Bhaskar, the lead actress in two of the featured films, who attended the event and participated in post-screening Q&A sessions. Known for her realistic portrayals of female characters, Ms. Bhaskar shared her insights during conversations with the audience, providing valuable perspectives on her career in Bollywood.
